The Opportunity

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is in the process of developing an Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre in the Gulf Fisheries building in Moncton, NB. The Centre will serve as a partnership hub for likeminded agencies, both within and outside of government, to collaborate on examining issues affecting our coastal and estuarine waters. In addition to the world class research that will be conducted here, the ASEC will be a place where the public and our youth can learn from experts and experience the wonders of the oceans in the Gulf region. 

Portfolio was mandated to run a facilitation session with over 20 key stakeholders from the DFO Gulf region in order to collect the visions and sentiments of all involved. 



The Solution

Portfolio thoroughly digested all existing background information and asked all the right questions in order to get to the heart of the concerns, challenges and opportunities going into the facilitation session. The facilitation session was designed to be a visionary exercise that would help the project reach its full potential by allowing key stakeholders to share their thoughts, concerns and visions, all while probing the right questions and playing devils’ advocate when needed. The session aimed to educate, stimulate and inspire these stakeholders, to ensure that they saw themselves and their respective departments in the ultimate vision.



The Results

Portfolio effectively and productively facilitated the session with several key stakeholders all while capturing the essence and discussions of the session through videography and thorough note-taking to ensure the session report was comprehensive and accurate. DFO staff were extremely pleased and impressed with the flow of the session, the participation, and Portfolio’s expertise and professionalism throughout. 


Portfolio has continued to work with DFO to complete a post mortem visionary report and prospectus, as well as other executable marketing initiatives to continue the momentum of the ASEC vision. 

Thanks to the leadership of Mike Randall, our “strategic exercise” with the entire management team was very productive.   The few advance meetings I held with Mike in preparation of our session was key in his planning.  He is a great leader and he ensured the discussions were valuable throughout the day and he provided background context and the objective earlier in the day.  He kept the agenda flowing and guided great debate which resulted in a very successful session.  I was extremely impressed with his professionalism and his ability to communicate with our entire group of app. 30 people.  He and his team’s attention to details throughout the day allowed me to fully participate and not worry about any logistic!
